The next iPhone will indeed miss the standard June-July release schedule, an AT&T customer representative claims. The statement was made after one customer noticed that his eligibility for a subsidized upgrade had been delayed by over five months, and contacted AT&T for an explanation. "Apple has informed us that they do not plan to release the iPhone in the June to July timeframe, though there will be a newer version in the future," part of the representative's response reads.
"Unfortunately, we have not been given a release time for the new phone. We will release this information on our website when it is available to us," the message finishes.
The claim is considered somewhat dubious as customer representatives are rarely if ever provided with that level of information before a formal announcement. It could however be a necessary piece of knowledge, given customer contracts, or simply a rumor and/or fact circulating internally at AT&T.
It would also be backed up by several more credible reports. The most frequently anticipated release date at this point is September, which would likely come alongside new iPods. The delay may be partly related to plans for iOS 5, which is expected to be a major overhaul.
