Samsung is now shipping its Galaxy S Wi-Fi 4.0 and 5.0 PMPs, first leaked in February. An official statement from the company reveals that the Galaxy S Wi-Fi 4.0 will first be available in Russia and will then be gradually rolled out in other markets. Switzerland will be the first to receive the Galaxy S Wi-Fi 5.0.
Much like the iPod touch, which is like a Wi-Fi only iPhone, the Galaxy S Wi-Fi 4.0 and 5.0 are described as offering, all the rich smartphone experiences of the Galaxy S smartphone, but sans the 3G radio and SIM slot. Both are powered by 1GHz Hummingbird processors and run Android 2.2 (Froyo), although an update to 2.3 (Gingerbread) remains a possibility. The 4.0 will ship with a 8GB microSD card, while the 5.0 will ship with a 16GB version. An HDMI port is included on both models. It would seem though, that the displays are not AMOLED, but instead high quality LCDs, possibly similar to the type used in the Galaxy Tab.
Video playback support includes DivX HD, MPEG4, H264, DivX, XviD, and WMV codecs . The devices also support VoIP over Wi-Fi as well as video communications.
No release date for North America or pricing has been announced.
