Affordable Huawei Ascend goes on sale through MetroPCS for $179

Owning an Android powered smartphone can't get any easier nowadays thanks to MetroPCS with their aggressive stance on offering some decent devices that won't break the bank.

Hacker brings ASLR security to jailbroken iPhones

You might be one of the many people who want to jailbreak their iPhone, but are concerned about a reduction in security. Charlie Miller of Security Evaluators affirms your concerns: "When you jailbreak it, it breaks a lot of security of a normal iPhone." Stefan Esser of SektionEins might have a suitable security solution for jailbroken iPhones in the near future.

Esser's solution, called antid0te, will add ASLR (address space layout randomization) to jailbroken devices. ASLR, as the name would imply, randomizes the locations where malware could be installed. That way, your device will be less prone to security breaches.


You should still be wary of jailbreaking your iPhone if it's an enterprise device, but normal users will have one less thing to worry about. "With Stefan's stuff, now maybe it's an option, if you're a security-conscious person, to still jailbreak your phone because you can pick up ASLR, which is going to make it a lot harder to do exploits," explains Miller.

Apple's iOS currently lacks ASLR, though Apple has made some inroads with their Mac OS X. Windows Phone 7, Windows 7, and Windows Vista, on the other hand, already include ASLR.

Verizon to remedy the two-minute delay in switching from 3G to LTE

Ever since Verizon introduced its "4G" network, users have noticed that that LG's LTE modem, which will cost you $249.99 without a contract, is having trouble handing you off from 3G coverage to LTE-blessed speeds. The wait has been an excruciating two minutes, until you stop sending data to the 3G network. In some cases users had to replug the modem for the magic to work.


Big Red acknowledged the issue and said it is hard at work fixing the two-minute delay before you switch from 3G to LTE. The carrier is also working on bringing the modem software to the Mac sooner rather than later, which should make Apple fans sigh with relief. To his credit, Verizon's CTO Tony Melone did warn that a brief delay will be occurring when users switch from 3G to LTE coverage, so this issue is not out of the blue, and a fix is on its way.

FSC Amilo Pro V3505 review

The Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pro V3505 (�536 inc. VAT) is a sturdy and conservative looking laptop aimed at the business user.

In keeping with its corporate status, it forgoes a glossy coating to the 15.4-inch screen, using a standard TFT panel instead. This means images don't look as vibrant as they do on most rival machines, but it performs far better in direct sunlight. On the daily commute we found fingerprints, dust and reflections were kept to a minimum, making it a lot easier to see your documents.

The images onscreen are rendered by an integrated graphics card - Intel's GMA 950. This helps to keep the V3505 affordable, and also helps battery life. We regularly managed to get over four hours of use between charges. 3D performance is unremarkable, but we had no trouble carrying out the tasks this machine was intended for, running office suites and browsing the internet with ease.


The V3505's design is fairly unusual for a corporate machine, mixing light grey and black plastics with a pleasing and distinctive effect. The light-coloured keyboard has large keys that are comfortable to use. They're firmly attached, but the board flexed slightly when typing. The touchpad was responsive, but we often found ourselves moving text by accident as we worked.

Rigid chassis

The FSC has a rigid chassis that's more than capable of standing up to everyday use. Unfortunately, although there's a relatively thick casing to the display, it doesn't offer as much protection for the delicate screen as it could. Considering its size, the 2.8kg weight is reasonable, and means you'll be able to carry it around without too much trouble.

The last time we tested an Amilo Pro V3505, we were impressed by the performance on offer. That was with Windows XP installed, so we were concerned performance might take a hit when running the more resource-hungry Windows Vista. This didn't prove to be the case - the 1.73GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T5300 processor was more than up to the task. Even when running Word, Photoshop and Windows Media Player the system was quick to respond.

Networks can be easily accessed, thanks to the inclusion of an 802.11a/b/g wireless adapter, and you'll be able to use fixed networks at the fastest possible speeds thanks to a Gigabit Ethernet card.

Providing everything the corporate user needs and nothing they don't, the V3505 is a very single-minded machine. It may not be packed with features, but its budget price and performance will appeal to the business user.

Chrome Pilot Program Releases Cr-48 Notebook. You�ll Want It

who are participating in the Chrome Pilot program are very close to getting a close-up of this compact gray-black notebook.

As the very first notebook designed with the Pilot program in mind, if you�ve got the heart of a power user, the Cr-48 will steal that heart and never give it back.

Booting takes all of 10 seconds, and resuming from sleep happens instantly. Wi-Fi and 3G are both naturally part of the deal, as is a webcam. The touchpad is on the big side, Google calls it �oversized�, and the 12 inch LCD mirrors a full size keyboard.


Now, when you look at this notebook, there�s a quality that�s immediately obvious, and it�s reminiscent of the square and solid look of full-sized laptops from a decade ago. It somehow spells resiliency and business, and, again � if you�re a power user � this is a look that will feel very intimate to you. But there�s also something refined on top of that, partly from the small form-factor, and partly from the color, which isn�t the purest black.

This quality�s character seems quite outspoken, and you might be able to hear its little voice saying �I�ve taken the best out of those tough business laptops and slimmed it down to something neat and sleek, but definitely not cutesy like those other notebooks, and now it all works for 8 hours on end and weighs just 3.8 pounds�.

Gigabyte to launch GSmart Rola - a Dual-SIM with Froyo in Q1

Gigabyte is preparing to launch a dual-SIM smartphone running on Android v2.2 Froyo. It's called GSmart Rola and it will launch on the bargain 175 euro in the beginning of 2011.

After the decent dual-SIM GSmart S1205 running on Windows Mobile 6.5, Gigabyte is ready to take their dual-SIM business over at the Android camp. The GSmart Rola runs Android v2.2 Froyo but packs barely decent specs - a 3.2-inch resistive WQVGA touchscreen, a 528MHz processor, 256MB RAM, 512MB ROM, a 3 megapixel fixed-focus snapper and a microSD slot.


The Rola's connectivity however has everything covered - Wi-Fi, quad-band GSM, 3G with HSDPA support, GPS (with aGPS support and digital compass), Bluetooth and even FM radio. We suppose the 3G would be available only on one of the SIMs though.

Gigabyte GSmart Rola will launch in Q1 2011 in selected regions with an expected retail pricetag of 175 euro.
