Samsung 22X DVD burner promises to cut spin-up time in half

samsung22xdvd Samsung in a mid-week intro chose to tackle the start-up speed of DVD burners with a new drive. The 22X speed SH-222AB is designed to cut the spin-up time for loading a disc from its usual 15 to 30 seconds by as much as 60 percent. Its technique should reduce some of the wait time to load a movie or start writing a blank disc before the transfer starts, not just in mid-session.

Along with burning write-once DVDs at its claimed speed, it can also burn DVD+RW and DVD-RW rewritable discs at 8X and 6X respectively, as well as burn CDs. Samsung hasn't illustrated OS support but so far is targeting the SATA-based drive at Windows users.

Computer buyers can buy the drive to add into a system today for about $29.
