Samsung brings out W200 underwater-ready pocket camcorder

samsungw200 Samsung unintentionally marked the death of the Flip by launching a new rugged pocket camcorder. The HMX-W200's body is toughened to survive drops as high as 6.5 feet and to shoot underwater as deep as 10 feet. Optics have been tuned expressly to shoot underwater: it uses a backside-illuminated CMOS sensor to improve its base low-light handling and an f2.2 aperture lens that captures a large amount of light.

Videographers can shoot "full HD" movies (possibly 1080i) and five-megapixel still photos. A 2.3-inch, 230,000-pixel display provides a look at footage.

Software has changed to match with an Aqua Mode that changes the image settings to compensate for water. Art filters invoke fake fisheye or vignetting. In a unique trick for simpler editing, Samsung has a Record Pause feature that can treat stop-and-start video recording as a single file rather than fragmenting it into multiple files.

A decision to use SD and microSD cards for storage helps keep the base price of the W200 down to $159. Stores should get the new camera in May.
